Braid Styles

From tight tradition to soft texture

Where you sit on this range is mostly about how traditional the function is and how much weight you want to wear.

Classic jadai braid

Tight, sleek and built to carry a full alangaram of flowers and billai. The muhurtham standard, and the heaviest of the options.

Messy braid

Loosened and textured after plaiting, with flowers pinned rather than woven. Much lighter, very forgiving on fine hair, and currently the most requested.

Fishtail braid

A finer, more intricate weave that photographs beautifully from behind. Needs reasonable length and a little more time.

Side-swept braid

Worn over one shoulder. The right answer with a backless or heavily embroidered blouse, and a reception favourite.

Braided crown detail

Small braids taken back from the hairline into the main plait. Adds detail at the front, where most close-up photographs are taken.

The maalai maatral is the single hardest moment for bridal hair. A braid takes the full force of it.

Anchor the crown first
The crown section is secured independently before the braid is started, so a pull on the plait cannot drag the front of the hairstyle back.

Braid tension, then release
Plaited firmly and then loosened deliberately in controlled places. A braid that is loosened as it is made is one that unravels.

Weight at the tail
Kunjalam is not only decorative. The weight keeps the braid hanging straight and stops it swinging forward when you are lifted or turned.

Flowers pinned, not tied
Individually pinned so a single flower coming loose does not take a whole band with it.

Re-checked between rituals
We check and re-pin after the garland exchange and before the photo session. Two minutes, and it is why the last photos still look like the first.

Which braid is best for a South Indian wedding?

A classic jadai braid for the muhurtham if you want the full traditional look, or a messy braid if you would rather something lighter and softer. Both take flowers and billai; the messy version is considerably more comfortable.

Can you do a bridal braid on short hair?

Yes, with colour-matched extensions blended into your own hair. Once the flowers and jadai billai are set, there is no visible join.

How long does a bridal braid with flowers take?

One and a half to two hours including the flower work, on top of the base preparation. That time is written into your getting-ready schedule.

Will a braid survive the garland exchange?

It will if the crown is anchored separately before the braid is started. That is the specific failure point, and it is the first thing we secure.

What is a messy braid and who does it suit?

A plait that is loosened and textured after it is made, with flowers pinned in rather than woven through. It suits fine hair, long days and brides who find a tight jadai too heavy.

Can I wear a braid with a backless blouse?

Yes — a side-swept braid over one shoulder is the usual solution. It keeps the back visible while still giving you a traditional braid in the photographs.

Do you use jadai billai and kunjalam?

Yes, if you bring them. They are usually family pieces or rented with your jewellery, and we set them into the braid on the morning.

Is a braid heavier than a bun?

With a full alangaram, yes noticeably. That weight is what keeps it hanging correctly, but if it concerns you, a messy braid or a bun is the more comfortable choice.
