The Elements

What goes into a full jadai

A traditional South Indian bridal braid is assembled from parts, in order. Every one of them changes how it sits and how long it holds.

Jadai billai

The graduated temple-motif plates pinned down the length of the braid. Placed largest to smallest so the taper follows your natural braid shape.

Poola jada — the flower braid

Jasmine, kanakambaram and roses arranged in bands down the plait. The Telugu poola jada is denser and more sculptural than a Tamil jadai; both are built the same way underneath.

Kunjalam at the tail

The gold tassels that finish the braid and give it weight so it hangs straight instead of curling forward as you move.

Nagar and rakodi at the crown

The crown pieces that anchor the whole arrangement. Set first, because everything below hangs off the tension they create.

Gajra and veni

Jasmine strings wrapped around a bun or laid along the braid. Light, fragrant and the fastest way to make a simple style look complete.

Temple jewellery balance

The hair is styled against your actual maang tikka, nathu and necklace so nothing sits on top of anything else.

Ordering your flowers

Brides consistently under-order. Here is what to ask your florist for, so the jadai is not half-empty by the last section.

Jasmine — order by the muzham
For a full-length jadai, budget around six to eight muzham of jasmine. Ask for it strung, not loose, and collected on the morning rather than the night before.

Kanakambaram for contrast
The orange firecracker flower that gives a Tamil jadai its colour bands against white jasmine. Two to three muzham is usually enough.

Roses for the crown and bands
Twenty to thirty individual roses, stems trimmed short. Red and deep pink hold their colour under hall lighting better than pale shades.

Keep them cool, not cold
A damp cloth in a basket at room temperature. Refrigerating jasmine browns the petals, and it will show in every close-up.

Tell your florist the time
For a 3 AM start the flowers need to arrive by 2:30. Florists who are told 'morning' routinely deliver at 7, and by then the jadai is finished.

I had an incredible experience with Shaarmika's bridal studio. Not only is she an extremely talented and Professional Artist, she is also a really down to earth person. She curated very personalized Makeup Looks for each of my Wedding function which was all done so well. Not only did I look different, she still managed to keep all the looks very natural and neat. Rekha, was also very helpful and made valuable suggestions for my outfits and jewellery. I had a really wonderful experience with her and I am super Happy to have chosen her for my Wedding Makeup. My family and I were very concerned about safety and hygiene. But, Rekha and her Team were extremely mindful about this. They were all wearing Masks, kept sanitising their hands & tools. This was indeed a great relief. South Indian Hairstyles — Questions

What is jadai alangaram?

The traditional South Indian bridal braid decoration — jadai billai plates, flowers, a rakodi or nagar at the crown and kunjalam tassels at the tail, assembled onto a braid built to carry the weight.

What is the difference between jadai and poola jada?

They are regional versions of the same idea. The Tamil jadai typically alternates jasmine and kanakambaram in bands along the braid with billai plates; the Telugu poola jada is usually denser and more sculptural, built almost entirely from flowers.

How many flowers do I need for a jadai?

For a full-length jadai, roughly six to eight muzham of strung jasmine, two to three of kanakambaram and twenty to thirty roses. We will confirm the amount once we have seen your hair length at the trial.

Do you supply the flowers and jadai billai?

No — flowers come from your florist and the billai, kunjalam and rakodi are usually family pieces or rented with your jewellery. We build everything you bring into the braid on the morning.

Can I have a jadai if my hair is short?

Yes, with extensions for length. They are colour-matched and blended in, and once the flowers and billai are on, the join is not visible.

How long does a full jadai take to build?

One and a half to two hours on top of the base hairstyling, which is why muhurtham mornings start so early. It is written into your schedule so nothing gets rushed.

Is a full jadai heavy to wear?

It has real weight, but distribution is what matters. We spread it down the braid rather than loading the crown, which is what prevents the headaches brides sometimes describe.

Will the flowers stay fresh all day?

Jasmine and kanakambaram hold well if they are collected on the morning and kept at room temperature under a damp cloth. Refrigerating them causes browning, so please do not.
