Drape Styles

Six drapes we do regularly

Each of these hangs differently and needs a different pinning plan. The choice usually follows the function and the community.

Classic Tamil Kanjivaram

Six yards, crisp pleats, pallu over the left shoulder and pinned flat so the border pattern reads clearly in photographs.

Half-saree (langa voni)

For the ritu kala samskara and younger family members. Skirt, blouse and davani set so the davani sits without slipping all evening.

Seedha pallu

Pallu taken over the right shoulder and spread across the front. Shows off heavy pallu work, and common for North Indian style receptions.

Butterfly pallu

Narrow, gathered pleats at the shoulder. Lighter and more modern — a reception choice, particularly with a georgette or lighter silk.

Gujarati drape

Pallu front to back over the right shoulder, spread across the chest. Requested for mixed-community weddings and some receptions.

Reception & designer sarees

Lighter fabrics need entirely different pinning from a stiff Kanjivaram — they slip where silk holds, so the approach changes.

Why a Kanjivaram fights you

Heavy silk is beautiful and uncooperative. Understanding how it behaves is most of what good draping is.

Weight pulls the drape down
A nine-hundred-gram saree drags at the shoulder over hours. Weight is taken at the waist and the shoulder is pinned to relieve it.

Stiff silk will not hold a fold
New Kanjivaram resists pleating until it has been worked. Pre-pleating or pressing beforehand makes an enormous difference on the morning.

Zari borders slip on themselves
Metallic borders are slippery. Pleats need pinning through the border, not just at the waistband, or they open as you walk.

You have to be able to sit
A muhurtham involves hours of sitting cross-legged. The drape is set with that in mind, not for a standing portrait.

It settles as the day goes
Silk relaxes with body heat. Re-pinning between functions is normal and expected, and it takes about five minutes.

Bridal Saree Draping — Questions

How much does bridal saree draping cost in Chennai?

It is included in every bridal package from ₹7,999, alongside makeup and hairstyling. Draping-only bookings without makeup are also possible and quoted separately.

How long does it take to drape a bridal Kanjivaram?

Thirty to forty-five minutes for a standard six-yard Kanjivaram. Heavier sarees and a madisar take longer, and that time is built into your schedule.

What should I bring for the draping?

The saree, a well-fitted blouse, a matching petticoat with a working drawstring, and plenty of safety pins. We bring bridal pins as well, but heavy silk uses more than most people expect.

Should I get my Kanjivaram pre-pleated?

For a new, very stiff silk it genuinely helps — the pleats sit sharper and the drape takes less time on the morning. Your tailor can do it, or a pre-pleating service.

Will the drape be comfortable to sit in?

That is a design constraint we work to. A muhurtham means hours of sitting, often cross-legged, so the drape is set for that rather than for standing photographs.

Can you do a butterfly or seedha pallu?

Yes, along with Gujarati, half-saree and classic Tamil drapes. We will show you the options against your actual saree at the trial.

Do you re-drape between the muhurtham and reception?

Yes. Silk settles over hours and the reception outfit is usually different anyway, so a fresh drape is part of the same-day turnaround.

Can you drape a saree for my mother or sister too?

Yes, family draping can be added at a per-person rate agreed before you confirm. Tell us the numbers at booking so the time is in the schedule.
